LJI XI - 1: Introduction

This is my 7th season of LJ Idol, and yet introduction never gets easier.

Hello, my name is Elena.

These are of my favourite things: my new fandom Good Omens, stressing over the PhD dissertation that I need to finish, but struggle with very much, my new favourite actor and nice person Michael Sheen, stressing over having to teach physics to college students next term, re-reading Good Omens (the book), translating science articles, watching Michael Sheen movies, reading physics textbooks (one hour a day when I can make myself), reading Good Omens fanfics, my dog Hera, editing the translation of scientific articles (and stressing over it because I have never done it before), participating in various fandoms, slow reading, stressing over the article I need to submit before I can present my dissertation, waiting for Michael Sheen to go back on stage, learning to work, and live, more productively, my new fandom Good Omens...

For Idol, I write about whatever comes to mind when the topic is announced, and looking for something to talk about is one of my favourite things about the competition. Until then.

So happy to see you're back! I'm really looking forward to reading your entries as they have brought me so much joy and education of the past years. Welcome back!

I did love Good Omens, the show, haven’t read the book yet though. Can’t wait to read more from you!

Thank you :)

I cannot quite describe the difference between the book and the show. It is perhaps the best adaptation I have seen in years, but the accents have been changed very strongly at the same time, even if you ignore that the series is set today and the book was written 20ish years ago.

Looking forward to your stories as well!

So glad to see you back; I loved reading you so much last season! (my other username is bellatrix in case of confusion!)

Thank you!

Yes, I remember both of your names from last season (was a little confused then :) but your userpic helped).

(Good Omensssssss)

Welcome back. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing! I have zero objections, for example, to Good Omens fic where inspired...

Hahaha, I very rarely write fanfic for Idol, but maybe. :)

I could talk about Good Omens all day. The book was my favorite from the moment I picked it up, and when I heard there was going to be a show, I was super excited. I made my whole family watch it with me, twice.

Also, it's good to see familiar faces for this round.

I read the book and it was oksy, but then I watched the first trailer and knew I had to watch the series (I usually avoid tralers like a plague because the almost never do justice to the movie).

Thank you :)

Thank you, Julie! I am looking forward to hearing from you again, too.

(I did not realize that so much of your family were on LJ at one time or another. And also that story with the founder of LiveJournal, haha. Kind of awkward, but also fun. I imagine your son was quite second-hand embarrassed, too. *giggle*)

You are right; he was a little chagrined! But how was I to know?
Just yesterday I looked up Livejournal and it mentions some other person, Brad Fitzpatrick, as the actual founder. But I imagine that, like so many other technical endeavors, Brad collaborated with his friends to develop the idea. Evan, like my son Tobin, is obviously one of those tech nerds who wallow in the joy of tinkering with programming, so I can practically see the whole concept birthing.

Another weird story about Evan: Tobin had told another friend, a certain Sara, all about Evan. Later, Sara got on a plane and began to talk to her seatmate. After a while, the two of them realized that they had a mutual friend, Tobin. It was the same Evan!

Of course, there was no way you could!

I love the "small world" stories. Alas, things like "meeting a friend in another country by accident" never happen to me, if you don't count discovering that scientific fields are quite small, too. (I have been reading my articles attentively for a few years, instead of just coasting like before, and yes, I am starting to see who works on what with whom. There really is not that many lead researchers.)
